Desert Casita

Smart Design for Sun and Sky!
The Casita features an L-shaped footprint that fits perfectly into a backyard corner. This intelligent shape creates a courtyard-like space with the existing house while allowing maximum natural light to stream into the interior. Views are intentionally directed into the shared yard space and are lovely from every vantage point inside the home.
Built with sustainability in mind, the roof is sloped for rainwater collection and is prepped to easily accommodate solar panels. Additionally, deep roof overhangs effectively shield windows from direct sun exposure, helping to keep the interior cool.
Customization for Creativity and Comfort
This Casita was custom-built for an extended family member: an aging artist with an eccentric style and need for wall space to showcase her art.
To suit these creative and accessibility needs, we converted the original two-bedroom plan into a large single bedroom. This spacious, open area provides ample room for sleeping, living, and showcasing the art collection. The open floor plan also allows the kitchen and living room to flow together, making the home feel more spacious and efficient.
Integrating with the Neighborhood
The home’s style blends seamlessly with the surrounding Mid-Century Modern neighborhood. It is discreetly tucked behind the main house, not visible from the street. Access is provided by a paved path that leads around the main house to the unit's private entrance. Views from the Casita are focused inward, toward the quiet, shared yard space.
It’s a beautiful, functional home, and we look forward to seeing it brought to life with furnishings!
